Antibiotics resistance: Bangladesh experience
Due to the use of excessive antibiotic medicines, bacteria change their response to those drugs. Consequently, antibiotics become resistive in the human body.
In the last two decades, the production of medicines in Bangladesh has increased much but the availability of essential medicines to humans may not be adequate yet. Antibiotic or antimicrobial is given for the treatment of infectious diseases in Bangladesh. Nonetheless, if antibiotics or antimicrobials become resistant to the human body then there will be various problems. Unfortunately, most of the people of our country are not really aware of this issue.
Antibiotic resistance is increasing in Bangladesh for many reasons such as the unstructured health system, having antibiotics for the given specific time period, use of unnecessary antibiotics in livestock and fisheries, and the immoral intentions of drug dealers in pharmacies.
In developing country like Bangladesh, people get sick in various diseases due to various types of microorganisms or microbes, including bacteria, fungus and so on. There are many diseases, including diarrhea, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and gonorrhea which cannot be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to prevent and treat bacterial infections. Due to the use of excessive antibiotic medicines, bacteria change their response to those drugs. Consequently, antibiotics become resistive in the human body. Our body has some useful bacteria that protect us from harmful bacteria. But due to the superfluous antibiotic medicines, the good bacteria get damaged. As a result, the immune system declines.
In our country, the people who sell medicine in pharmacies do not give the antibiotic with a proper prescription. They do not know exactly about the antibiotic resistance. If antibiotic medicines are resistant to our body then treatment will be threatened for bacterial infection. This will result in the deterioration of human health, people will agonize with complex diseases such as parametric arthritis.
One study has found that the bacteria- Pseudomonas aeruginosa is responsible for the infection of the ears, throat, and urine infections. And 50 percent of the most commonly used antibiotics do not work against bacteria in ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, cefuroxime, and azithromycin. Another medical college study found that only 73.1% of the people were given antibiotics beyond the requirement.
Antibiotic drug abuse is actually a big problem in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh government, especially Bangladesh Drug Administration should make some laws and implement them for distributing antibiotic medicine appropriately so that someone cannot buy and sell antibiotics easily without permission. Because of uncontrolled distribution and the misuse of antibiotic medicines creates antibacterial resistance to the human. In addition to electronic and print media, doctors can help solve this problem.
