Women Contribution in ICT(Information Communication Technology) in Bangladesh is Not Enough to Satisfy
we highly appreciate to get more women participation in the ICT industry to uphold our country towards the world.
The way how Bangladesh is proceeding with the advancement of technology is very praiseworthy. Bangladesh is one of the developing countries in the world. Where population is a national factor. About half of the population is women and without their involvement, no sector can truly flourish.
Women contribution in the sector of Information and Communication Technology is really appreciable. As our women need to play a vital role in family and if they carry out a job. Despite of so many social obligation and barrier, they are equally participating in the field of innovation, research and continued development. Women are contributing in every phase of technological advancement.
ICT division is enriched over time along with other countries in the world which is unbelievable in the context of our country. Now we became digitised in most of the cases of our daily activities.
The job perspective even changed over time mostly for the female job sectors. The participation of the female in the ICT division is appreciable but nowadays the expectation level from the female has getting as big as the mountain everest.
Women’s participation in Bangladesh’s expanding ICT sector is still very low, compared to that of other countries. We highly encourage them to enrich their involvement regarding the sector and to make this sector more advanced as other country of the world.
In the ICT division, the contribution of the women are not much satisfactory as our expectation from them is a lot as they have achieved this position over time.
If we try to find out the reason behind the lack of women participation in the ICT industry, we got few basic reason which could be even developed if we together want and work.
At present there are 90 universities in our country offer Computer Science, Engineering and ICT degree, where 38,000 students are getting the degree and only 9,500 of them are women which is a huge lack. Moreover, less than 1 percent of them are getting interested to built their career in this ICT industry.
According to Lafifa Jamal, the head of Robotics and Mechatronics, Dhaka University briefly describe regarding the lack of women participation in ICT industry. She talked about our mindset is the main reason for this lack.
According to her speech in the Tech Women Conference 2017,” I was a student of the first batch of DU’s Computer Science and Engineering Department and the only woman among 20 men. Surprisingly, even after 20 plus years, the 21st batch had 60 men and three women, which shows that the ratio still remains about the same even after all these years.
The reason behind this is our mind-set. We think some jobs are not for women. We want our female doctors to specialise in gynaecology, and sometimes hesitate to see a woman in other specialties. When we buy toys for children, we buy dolls and pots and pans for our daughters, and guns and cars for the boys.
We are the ones creating gaps among men and women. At a computer science seminar that I attended recently, a woman from the audience got up to ask whether it is possible to manage time for this kind of work. I believe that is possible.
You have to be efficient in time management and you can also use the online platform to work in this sector. It is up to us to change the perception of our next generation.”
Additionally if we see, there are very less participation which is near about Zero participation of the women in the Maths, Physics, Information Olympiad Team, Programming Team thought we are at the top in the programming from South Asia.
Where other country women are participating with huge ration in the ICT industry beside the male contribution. Even Though the participation of Bangladeshi women in the google, facebook, microsoft are not even satisfactory.
The productivity is stuck at 6.5 percent because we can not incorporate more women in this industry. So, we we take initiative now to get more women participation in ICT industry, it will bring our country in the advanced life.
